An infuriating case of student fee red tape has delayed a construction project at the University of Southern California, costing the university $1.2 million.
According to the Los Angeles Times, parents and students from USC's Fowler School of Real Estate Management at the University were outraged to learn that the university had hired the Corbett Group, a national engineering firm, to prepare a report that would determine the viability of a proposed $4.2 million parking garage for the school.
The parents were furious that the school was racking up unnecessary costs when a preliminary engineering study already had cost USC more than $450,000, the L.A. Times reported.
While the Corbett Group's final report is likely to determine whether the school will proceed with the parking garage, students and parents said that school administrators delayed the approval process in order to avoid public scrutiny and debate on the project.
"We have a family-friendly school, a place where students and parents are a priority. We don't want this ridiculous process to distract from our goals for the school," Fowler student Ken Clavell said. "We want a parking garage. We want this process to be completed as quickly and as efficiently as possible."
